Summary On one Fourth of July, Barney Northrup had rented out every single apartment in Sunset Towers to already selected tenants. Barney Northrup had rented 6 apartments to a dressmaker, an inventor, a doctor, a judge, and a secretary. But among all of the residents living in Sunset Towers, one was a bookie, one was a burglar, one was a bomber, and one was simply a mistake. Many of the residents in Sunset Towers get invited to the reading of Samuel Westing's will in the Westing mansion located just on the next hill over from Sunset Towers. Sam Westing was a game-loving millionaire who owned Westing Paper Products. In his will, he claims that one of the possible heirs to his fortune murdered him. He also states that whoever unveils the murderer inherits his company, estate, and fortune which is estimated to be worth over $200 million! He divides the 16 possible heirs into 8 pairs and gives them a set of clues and $10,000. Finally, the will tells them, "It is not what you have, it's what you don't have that counts." Let the Westing Game begin!

Setting
The story takes place in Westingtown, Wisconsin. Sunset Towers, where most of the characters live in the story is located on the shore of Lake Michigan on the eastern outskirts of Westingtown.
